After the 4-0 thrashing of Wigan, and despite the 6-0 defeat to Arsenal, Blackpool is now the fourth most sought after area for hotels in the country.

Since The Tangerine’s promotion to the top flight of English football, demand for hotels in the area has increased dramatically, with internet searches for Blackpool hotels up 164% since May 2010, according to the travel comparison site travelsupermarket.com

This undoubtedly is due to away fans wanting to visit Bloomfield Road to see their side against the Premiership new boys, as most fans will have not have been to Blackpool’s ground unless facing them in a cup tie. Whilst Blackpool illuminations attract huge crowds to the area between September and November, the draw of Premiership football has clearly been a massive influence on the increase in demand of hotels in the area.

Based on searches for UK hotels over the last four months since Blackpool were promoted, the seaside town has moved up from ninth place to fourth:

Bob Atkinson, travel expert from travelsupermarket.com, commented: “Undoubtedly the promotion of Blackpool’s football club is a welcome boost to hoteliers as well as the town’s economy as a whole. In addition to visiting for a Premiership football match, Blackpool has a lot to offer whether you’re travelling with your family, friends, or as a couple. It’s a unique all year round destination that seems to have more and more to offer every year.”

Ian Holloway’s men have had an amazing journey to the top flight, and opened their campaign by trouncing Wigan 4-0 at the DW Stadium, with Marlon Harewood bagging two goals, much to the delight of the travelling supporters. Blackpool will be hoping for a repeat of the Wigan performance every week, and can grab vital points against the likes of Fulham, Newcastle and Blackburn over the coming weeks, but as long as they consolidate their position in the Premiership, most fans will still be smiling when May 2011 comes around.
