David Carney

David Carney signed from FC Twente on deadline on a one year deal with a further year option. Originally a Everton trainee Carney played at Oldham and Halfax town before going to Scotland to play for Hamilton Academical. He returned to Australia to play for Sydney FC. Sheffield United then signed him up on a three-year contract. He was loaned out to Norwich after being frozen out of the side by new boss Kevin Blackwell.

Carney then hooked up with FC Twente and ex England manager Steve McLaren and won the Dutch league. For Australia he’s made 31 caps scoring 4 goals for the Socceroos

I was a Blackpool season ticket holder in the 60s and 70s and never used to miss a home game in those days. Now Australia is home and since the start of the A League in Australia in 2005 I’ve been a member at Sydney FC but still follow the Pool closely. I’m delighted to see David Carney turn up.

Carney was always my favourite Sydney player. He’s solid in defence and gives width on the left in attack, and is always capable of knocking in the odd goal himself. I was sorry to see him leave in 2007 but in those days if you wanted to get into the national side you just had to play in Europe. If you’d bet me then he’d be playing for Blackpool in the EPL in 2010 you’d now own my house and probably my wife with it.

Good luck Carney. The Blackpool fans probably don’t appreciate yet what a gem they’ve acquired and will enjoy watching you.
