It’s less than one month till the opening fixture of the Championship season against Millwall and as ever we are leaving it late to make any signings. So far we’ve only added young right-back Jake Caprice to our squad. While other clubs are getting prepared we seem to be lacking in bringing in new faces which never breads confidence into us fans, but it’s not had too much of a negative affect on us in previous seasons, so is there any reason to panic now?
We haven’t lost to many “first team” players from the end of last season apart from Stephen Dobbie who still may come back if a fee agreed with Swansea and Dobbie can agree terms.
As for the rest of the Championship it’s a mixed bag. Only two other teams have made less signing so far, Watford and Nottingham Forest. Yes, that’s Watford who only appointed Gianfranco Zola as manager this week and Forest who don’t have a manager. All other teams have made two or more additions.
On average each team has made 3 signing each, Sheffield Wednesday have been busiest with 7 new recruits.
The data for the above table has been compiled from the signing lists on the BBC. See the spreadsheet online at google docs. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjxfcMN-m2jndDdYejFPSXRwMWhWSUNUQXRRWmxsV0E
So any reason to panic? The loan system has always been good to us, Premier League teams don’t announce their squad list for a while (not a clue on the date) and we generally haven’t made loan signings until after the season starts. We’ve always been late to sign players generally so it looks like much of the same old style!
In a poll on the site a while ago you voted that we need 4 more players, so three more to go!
